Select the volunteer program that works for you:

  • Volunteer opportunities are available to work with 3rd grade students through adult learners.
  • Flexible volunteer hours are available during the school day and Saturday.
  • No teaching experience is required.
  • Volunteers are asked for a minimum 1-2 hour per week commitment for at least ten weeks/one semester. An orientation session is required before a volunteer is placed. This 2-hour session is scheduled on a regular basis.
Volunteering is easy!
VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED: The staff at LAO America work very hard to have quality activities for the entire Lao community. However, they can’t do it alone; they need volunteers. Here’s what you can do—cook a meal, teach Lao language, teach computer, instruct and adult ESL class, drive a van, read to young children, write for the newsletter … The possibilities are endless, only desire is limited. To volunteer please contact 612-302-9048.
Last year over 20 individuals - including parents, and secondary school and college students - shared their time and talents by volunteering thousands of hours in schools and at the Lao Cultural Center. Anyone who enjoys helping young or adult students achieve great things can volunteer with the Lao Advancement Organization of America (LAO America).

Tuesday, October 5, 2004 was a special day for LAO America. That was the day volunteers from Southern Graphic Systems, part of the Alcoa Corporation, spent time helping children and elders of the Lao community in Minneapolis.

A high point of the evening was the bookfair for the kids. The kids were able to choose several

books of their own from the hundreds collected by the employees of SGS. After finding their books, many of the kids found a volunteer and spent time reading their new treasure.

Volunteers also helped adults study for their citizenship test. By asking test questions, the students were able to hear them from a native English speaker, making them better prepared for their interview.

No gathering of kids and volunteers would be complete without homework. Many kids brought homework and found willing helpers from SGS.

Of course no get together of this kind would be complete without food. Thanks to the Employees of Southern Graphic Systems there was a picnic in October. All the good picnic stuff was served—hot dogs, chips, cookies, fruit and juice.

The evening was top off with a game time when kids and volunteers pitted their skills against each other in ping-pong, chess and Connect Four.

LAO America would like to thank Lisa Skordahl and all the employees that organized and participated in the this event. It was truly a great evening
